What is a Provisional Sum?

The JBCC defines a Provisional Sum as "An amount included in the contract sum for the supply and installation of work by a subcontractor".

A Provisional Sum is an allowance, usually estimated by consultants, that is inserted into the tender documents for a specific element of the works that is not yet defined in enough detail for tenderers to price. This, together with a brief description, allows tenderers to apply mark up and attendance cost within their overall tender price and make allowance for the work in the contract programme.
