Project Management is defined as the process and activity of planning, organising, motivating and controlling resources, procedures and protocols to achieve specific goals in scientific or daily problems.

Easy enough to define but in the construction environment it can be exceptionally hard to do! No matter how big or small your construction project is; you need to have a well-thought-out project management plan in place. And although many managers and engineers involved in the construction industry think that they instinctively understand proper project management as well as how to effectively schedule and control all of the aspects of a project, the high number of claims resulting from delays and damages within the industry clearly show that they don’t!

If you want to avoid project failure, you have to take the time to plan thoroughly. In a recent survey in the US it came to light that almost 50% of all construction projects undertaken fail to meet their goals on time, within budget and/or in line with the specifications...I wonder what percentage of South African based projects fail, sadly there are no current statistics but I am sure that they are in line with or even slightly higher than the American stats? The main reasons that construction project managers gave for the failure of their projects were:

75% - missed milestones and deadlines
55% - exceeded budgets
37% - not able to actually meet the project requirements

So, if you have ever experienced any of the points above, you are not alone. Many construction managers, engineers and contractors fall into the trap of getting locked into a project before all the requirements and resources have been clearly defined and planned. This often means that a project is doomed, literally before it starts and this can result in communication, sequencing and execution problems that can quite literally handicap the job from start to finish.

With all this in mind, there can be absolutely no doubt that the value of a comprehensive construction schedule is worth its weight in gold. And the aim of any construction schedule is to assist with the proper planning and co-ordination of all aspects of your construction project.

So this training course has been researched and designed to show you how to use all the very latest project management tools, tips and techniques so that you can create better schedules that improve productivity, save time and simplify all of your construction scheduling activities from the initial planning and scheduling phase to actual schedule development, including updates and the project close-out.
