SITE VISIT
NELSON MANDELA BRIDGE
SAFCEC, in conjunction with the Construction Division of SAICE,
has organised a site visit to the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg
to take place from 14:00 on Friday, 1st November 2002.This unique
cable stayed bridge is being constructed by Grinaker-LTA who have
kindly offered to sponsor the site visit. The contract has reached
a critical stage with the commencement of cable spinning.The site
visit will take place in Grinaker-LTAs site office in the
Old Transnet Museum at the T-junction of Carr and Becker Streets,
Newtown, Johannesburg, and then on site. There will be light refreshments

LATEST trends in the shopping centre retailing business will come

runs the gauntlet on pollution claims
SIXTEEN residents and small-scale farmers in the Vanderbijlpark
area have had their patience tested by ongoing pollution of the
air and water by steel group Iscor, which dominates their landscape.
This week the group asked the Johannesburg High Court for an interdict
to stop Iscor polluting the underground water system, which they
claim is a health hazard. The residents live in Linkholm and Steel
Valley on smallholdings adjacent to Iscor's Vanderbijlpark plant.

Africa adds to its oil production
SA OIL and gas group Energy Africa said that new oil production
in the North Sea and Gabon had added 6000 barrels a day to the company's
net production.This represents a rise of about 23% in production
levels, which are now close to 22000 barrels a day. Energy Africa
chief operating officer Adrian Nel said the cost of developing the
new production sources was $4 a barrel on average.

miner BHP Billiton had decided not to renew an agreement whereby

Rand
falls back after earlier advances
THE rand ended unchanged yesterday, after export dollars helped
it gain 8c earlier in the day. It firmed again in afterhours trade
and was last at R10,38 against the dollar, with foreign players
helping it along.

IN DEVELOPING countries, foreign aid arrives with the best intentions
but often with too little co-ordination among donors. The result
can be a raw deal for both the recipients of aid and the taxpayers
who fund it.

Tax,
not just an employees responsibility
Matthew Lester a professor of taxation studies at Rhodes University
wrote a very interesting article for the Sunday Times recently.
He said that there has been a large increase in the inspection teams
at SA Revenue Services. He said that this means it is no longer
a question of whether or not a business will be audited, but when.

1) pick a number from 1-9
2) subtract 5
3) multiply by 3
4) square the number (multiply by the same number -- not square
root) and if it's negative make it positive.
5) add the digits until you get only one digit (i.e. 64=6
4= 10= 1 0=1)
6) if the number is less than 5, add five. Otherwise subtract
4.
7) multiply by 2
8) subtract 6
9) map the digit to a letter in the alphabet 1=A, 2=B, 3=C,
etc...
10) pick a name of a country that begins with that letter
11) take the second letter in the country name and think of
a mammal that begins with that letter
12) think of the color of that mammal
