Former Harare estate agency owner Matt Mercer, who recently joined Pam Golding Properties in Hout Bay, notes that the seaside town has always been a popular holiday and alternate home destination for landlocked Zimbabweans. Consequently, it was high on the list of choice locations for many of the 100 000 Zimbabweans who officially emigrated in the past year, and is currently benefiting from a surge in demand for new permanent residences.

Did you hear?
The sale of personalised and unusual car licence plates has become a small but steady earner for SA's provincial governments. In the Gulf state of Dubai, it's big business. Police there recently raised more than R30m from a single auction of plates. They included the number 2, sold to local businessman Abdul Rahman Amanallah Al Kamali for R2,7m. He expects to sell it on for more than R4m. He also paid a combined R3,6m for 6 and 11, which he bought as gifts for his son and daughter.
I wonder if Springbok rugby coach Harry Viljoen realises the danger he's let himself in for by selecting man-mountain Ollie le Roux in his squad. Sanlam's Club magazine tells us that after a hard training session, all the 122 kg prop wants to do is "lie on the coach and relax".
The front cover of the latest journal of the KwaZulu-Natal Institute of Architecture carries the words: "Make SA a Free Crime Country." It already is.
Actress Bethany Halliday is reported to be suing a London West End theatre for sexual discrimination because it didn't give her the lead in its next production. The part she wanted was of an innocent teenage virgin. By the time Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance begins its limited run at the Savoy Theatre, Halliday will be heavily pregnant.
