If there are any of our members who are involved or interested in the calculation of embodied carbon in the construction process they would be warmly welcomed to take part in this RICS project on behalf of South Africa/Africa.

Bellanger, RICS Project Manager, Standards, writes:

As the new Project Manager in charge of the 2nd version of RICS’ Methodology to calculate embodied carbon in the construction process, I am pleased to confirm this version will be a global guidance note, which will aim to 1) turn the UK recommendations of our current Information Paper Methodology to calculate embodied carbon of materials (attached) into global recommendations and 2) extend the measurement methodology in order to cover whole carbon accounting across the life cycle of a building.

As such, please let me know whether your world region is willing to contribute to this paper, based on the attached ‘project outline’ document that is detailing the scope of the guidance. Please let me know if you see anything worth adding/amending to this document. If you are willing to contribute, please let me know the names and contact details of the member(s) of your region that are willing to be part of the working group by 28th February.

We intend to have this guidance note ready to be launched in Spring 2014 at Ecobuild, ideally not only at Ecobuild UK but also at Ecobuild conferences in other world regions, if possible. For now, the key dates we’ve agreed on for this project’s schedule are:

  • 31st May 2013: Provision of the first draft (non edited)
  • w/c 1st July 2013: Working Group meeting to review first draft (edited)
  • w/c 2nd Sept 2013: Working Group meeting to review comments on the first draft
  • 16th October 2013: Uploading of the final edited draft to online consultation system
  • w/c 25th Nov 2013: Working Group meeting to review public consultation comments
  • Mid-February 2014: Final approvals
  • Early March 2014: Online publication for Ecobuild launch

I look forward to hearing from you. Please let me know should you have any question or query about this project.

Kind Regards,

Nathalie Bellanger
