TAXPAYERS embarking on transferring property out of companies, close corporations and trusts into their own names to avoid capital gains tax could face losses in the form of other taxes. They could attract as much as 20% estate duty, resulting in a net loss, warned Edward Nathan & Friedland tax director Beric Croome.

Tax reform prompts a rethink on brand value
WITH tax authorities examining intangible assets and intellectual property to see how they should be treated in tax reforms, accountants are thinking about brand value reporting as a supplement to the historic cost approach currently used. This implies a greater role for the valuation of all intangible assets and brands in particular, and calls for some form of uniformity of approach in how these values will be estimated.

Alex housing needs rethink
IN AN article published on Friday, I argued that the rebuilding of Alexandra is an opportunity with the potential to turn grants worth R1,6bn, and land estimated at R3,6bn, into a financial injection of about R20bn. This allows for consideration of larger city issues than merely an upgrade of the township, which is the focus of the present business plan for Alexandra.

Condoms may give Coega a start
A GERMAN company is planning to invest in a condom factory in Coega, as part of the R43bn arms offset deal. Industry sources said this week that German steel company Ferrostaal, which represents a submarine consortium involved in the offset programme, had put forward the investment in Coega by a German condom maker. The plan had been put to the trade and industry department for approval.

THE day you put your first employee on the books you will need to comply with a number of laws. For a small business, the applicable laws include the Labour Relations Act, the discrimination chapter of the Employment Equity Act and, depending on whether you have 50 employees or more, and your turnover, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, the Unemployment Insurance Fund Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

New update of WinQS
Version 5.1 of this popular program can now be downloaded from the Internet at http://www.winqs.co.za. Cathy Rocher of ACE Computer Services says that the upgrade should be installed on all workstations. The new update has a number of improvements, one of which is an improved export facility to MSExcel. Clients who do not have internet access, or a slow connection could request the update on CD from Cathy.

We received the latest schedules from the Department of Public works but have had problems converting them to PDF format for publication within the CUG. Mrs Williams of Malhurst primary set her class the task of writing about Father's Day. Belinda Tamsen instantly took up her pen and Mrs Williams knew she was about to privy to another episode in the life of he Tamsens.

Lorst year we bort my daddy a hammer drill for Fathers Day. It coss a millyun thousind rands. My daddy doant liek fixing things. But mie mummy nose wot shees do-ing.
We gave it to daddy an he say: Wow! wots this? 100 golf balls, I bet!
When he saw the drill he scratch his hed. My mummy sloely esplane it is for making holes in walls - liek for curtin rods.
Daddy sae curtin rods? as if he dussint unnerstand. But reely he know becos if mie mother orst him wuns she orst him a thousind tiems to put up the curtin rods in mie room.
Daddy sae but this is fathers day an I shud rest my weery bodee and mie mummy say ok but wot about fixing it tomorroe.
Nest day mie daddy cum inter mie room at 3 in the morning I wuddent be suppries. He sae its 8 o'clock and I muss moov orl my rub-bich outa the way an he stand onna chair and begin to drill holes. The drill went liek a macheen gun and bits of wall was flyin in orl di-reck-shuns.
When my little brutha caem in and saw daddy swairing and cuvverd in dust he wet hisself.
Mummy orst whot in hevins naem are you doing?
Wothoo think iem doing he se. iem drilling bluddy holes ornt I. Bluddy hell. Then he use a very rood werd.
Did yoo mesha were the scroo holes go she orst. Daddy sed it dusint matter becos the rod is a-just-ibull. Mummy sae it issint. He sae it is.
Mummy was rite and he had to drill more holes. She sae the holes are big enough for warthogs and he say there is nothing that polly-filla cornt fix.
Even-chew-ally he got the curtin rod up. I tried to close the curtins befor I went to bed and everythink fell down.
