We are pleased to announce that FNB Commercial have agreed to come on board as the main co-sponsors for the Centenary Gala Dinner scheduled for 18 October 2008. We are pleased about this development and thank them for their support and contribution to make this event possible. They have also agreed in principle to enter into a longer-term association with the ASAQS, details of which have yet to be discussed finalised.

We would also like to thank all the other sponsors that have agreed to support the event. Details of all the sponsors will be made public next week.

 MBSA CONGRESS 2008 A HUGE SUCCESS !!

The ASAQS President (Professor Rob Pearl) and ASAQS Executive Director (Mr Egon Wortmann) were privileged to be invited as special guests (and official representatives of the ASAQS) to the MBSA Congress 2008, held in Port Elizabeth from 21 to 23 September 2008. They have just returned a few days ago and have been happy to report that the congress was a huge success and certainly well worth attending. The arrangements went off well and the programme included a range of guest speakers that were both interesting and educational.

Professor Rob Pearl (ASAQS President) , Mrs Eunice Forbes (MBSA President), Mr Egon Wortmann (ASAQS Executive Director), Mr Pierre Fourie (MBSA Chief Executive Officer)

We were also privileged to enjoy the keynote address being presented by Minister Thoko Didiza, Minister of Public Works, which sadly was to be her last address before her resignation the following day. Ironically she resigned from the Minister's position a day after giving her address amid a week of unprecedented turmoil on the political front.

The congress was followed by the MBSA AGM and we are able to announce that the senior positions of the MBSA for the year 2008/2009 will be held as follows:

•Mrs Eunice Forbes (President - for second term)
•Mr Jean Mare Talbot (Vice President)
•Mr Gavin Roberts (Immediate Past President)
•Mr Pierre Fourie (Chief executive Officer)

The MBSA staff and organising committee must be congratulated on organising and excellent congress !!

 NEW ARTICLE IN THE CUG

The Intelligence section of the CUG has the gathering of competitive intelligence as it's focus. Information is essential to any strategy whether it be in your business or your personal life. This section is an attempt to assist members in gathering information that is crucial to their future.

We have requested Ben Dodd of Valuable Resources to write us articles that will be of interest to our members who are currently working overseas or considering to offer their services in foreign markets. In his first article he looks at the cost of housing in Australia. Click here to read on...

REPORT OF UPDATE OF MODEL TRADE PREAMBLES DOCUMENT

Members advised that the update of the Model Trade Preambles (revised version dated September 2008) document has been completed and is currently at the printers. Hard paper copies will be made available to the members within the next week. The document will also be made available in electronic format.

We would like to express our thanks to the following persons that were involved with the update, namely Professors Carl Klopper, Thys Sigle' and Tinus Maritz. For all your hard work and dedication – thank you !!

 ASAQS DATABASE UPDATE

The ASAQS Databse Committee met on Monday 15th September at the ASAQS in Midrand and discussed possible solutions to make elements of the database available and updatable on the Internet.

It was decided that the listing of firms on the ASAQS website should be updated with the correct information before the end of this month.

An e-mail was sent out to all QS practices registered with the ASAQS on 18 September 2008 containing the firm's information as currently reflected on the database. Please respond to this update request by no later than Friday, 26 September 2008 as the listings on the website will be updated shortly thereafter.

Firms who did not receive the update notification are urged to contact the ASAQS on (+27) 11 - 315 4140 or send an e-mail to administration@asaqs.co.za as soon as possible.

CENTENARY YEAR OF THE ASAQS - SPONSORS WELCOME

ASAQSCentenaryLogo100We are proud to announce that the ASAQS is celebrating its Centenary Year during 2008 !!

This is a proud milestone in the history of the ASAQS that will be celebrated this year by organising a number of gala events to mark this happy occasion. It also offers vast public relations opportunities for the ASAQS, an opportunity that must be seized and exploited to the maximum benefit of the ASAQS and associated organisations. We are proud of the 100 years of professional service to the Quantity Surveying profession in particular, and the built environment in general. This has all been made possible with the ongoing support and co-operation of business organisations in the built environment over the years.

The planning for the centenary celebrations is well progressed and the following activities are planned for this year :

  • The publication of the "A Century of Quantity Surveying in South Africa" desktop booklet – expected to be launched around mid-November 2008
  • Centenary Gala Dinner to be held on Saturday 18 October 2008 at the Pelindaba Room, Misty Hills Conference Centre in Muldersdrift, Johannesburg.
  • Selected centenary functions to be arranged on a regional basis.

We are looking forward to a very special year for the ASAQS and we will celebrate this major milestone with the due attention that it deserves !!

The highlight of the centenary year will no doubt be the national Centenary Gala Dinner scheduled for Saturday 18 October 2008. This function will provide an ideal opportunity to host members and business colleagues alike whilst celebrating the centenary year of the ASAQS. We are hoping to welcome the Minister of Public Works, Minister Thoko Didiza, as well as numerous important dignitaries to our gala event. The President of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (Mr John Popplewell) has already confirmed his attendance and we are looking forward to good support from our colleagues from across our northern borders from the Africa Association of Quantity Surveyors (AAQS). So it promises to be a great event and we are looking forward to this historic occasion with great anticipation.

Sponsorship Opportunities

The Centenary Gala Dinner offers a variety of business and networking opportunities to associated companies and organisations to become involved with this main function in terms of sponsorship and general support. We would like to offer business organisations in the built environment the opportunity to become involved and to expand their business exposure and influence with the Quantity Surveying profession and its members.

In terms of sponsorship opportunities and to assist raising funds for this gala event, we have prepared the attached "Sponsorship Options" document which clearly sets out what sponsors will get in return for the respective levels of sponsorship. There are basically three options open as follows :

  • Option 1 - R10 000 sponsorship
  • Option 2 - R25 000 sponsorship
  • Option 3 - R75 000 sponsorship

To view the "Sponsorship Options" document, please click here.

We would invite business companies/organisations to consider taking up this opportunity to market to this key group of professionals by getting involved and sponsoring one of the above options open to them. We would value their participation with this gala event.

Should they be interested in getting involved and taking up one of these sponsorship options, please feel free to contact the Executive Director, Mr Egon Wortmann, either by e-mail (director@asaqs.co.za) or by telephone (011 315 4140). Should they however have any further special wishes and/or requirements, please feel free to also discuss those and we will consider what is practical and achievable.

In order to finalise arrangements, we would value their response (even if only in principle) by no later than Friday 5 September 2008. We look forward to their response.

ASAQS SUB-LET OFFICES READY FOR OCCUPATION

We are pleased to announce that some weeks ago the Executive Director managed to secure a five-year tenancy of the spare office space (Unit G7) at the ASAQS offices. The tenants are "The South African Insurance Crime Bureau" (SAICB) who have signed a five-year lease commencing 01 October 2008. The lease agreement includes a total office area of 110 m2 and a total of 12 parking bays (6 open, 6 basement)..

 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK - 4

I have not had the opportunity to communicate through this vehicle for some time, the primary reason being the extensive traveling I have undertaken in recent times. Some of this has been on ASAQS business (e.g. attending the Board Meeting and Conference of the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors), and in addition, undertaking teaching duties in Singapore and Malaysia. This has however, provided me with the opportunity to interact with quantity surveyors from an incredibly diverse range of countries. In virtually every conversation with these colleagues, I have been struck by how similar our professional 'problems' are, no matter where we are based.
