Basie Verster was born in Vrede in the Free State and educated at Grey College in Bloemfontein.
Basie Verster has represented South Africa and the Free State with distinction on the rugby field and as member of the Shimlas team, he participated in two successful international tours. As a leading sports administrator and coach, he is committed to the development and advancement of sports skills in all sectors of the community.
He is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State, where he was awarded the degree of
Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying B Sc (QS) in 1974
Master of Science in Quantity Surveying M Sc (QS) in 1982
Doctor of Philosophy Ph D in 1995
He is an experienced, internationally accredited supervisor, promotor and external examiner of numerous successful postgraduate research studies.
His creative artistry is expressed in water colour paintings, and reproductions of his work were used as illustrations in his doctoral thesis.
In 1971, Basie married Hilda who is a 1997 final year candidate for the B Sc degree in Quantity Surveying at the University of the Orange Free State, and they have four sons, Pieter, Jan Frederick, Harold and Joubert.
