MEET THE PAST-PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICAN QUANTITY SURVEYORS 2006/2007

At a meeting held on 30 March 2006, the Board of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) appointed Prof Gerhard Brümmer as President of the ASAQS

Prof Brümmer obtained the degrees BSc(QS), MSc(QS)(Project Management) and PhD at the University of Pretoria (UP). He has been practising as a registered quantity surveyor and member of the ASAQS since 1979, during which period he served on various technical committees in the construction industry. He is the chairman of the Standard System Joint Committee

His practice experience includes a wide variety of services such as the provision of office and university buildings, brewery installations and dispute resolution. He is responsible for most of the quantity surveying services on the Muckleneuk Ridge Campus of UNISA, regarded as a landmark in Pretoria for which he received an award. He has been appointed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) to lead a task team of the Reconstruction and Development Programme whereby tradesman training were integrated with building contracts. He also led a task team for DPW whereby HIV/AIDS awareness measures were integrated with building contracts.

Prof Brümmer was appointed as Head of the Department of Construction Economics at UP in 2001. The department is multi-disciplinary of nature and offers programmes in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Real Estate and Project Management. All programmes are accredited nationally and internationally by the relevant professional bodies. In 2003 he became the Chairman of the School for the Built Environment at UP. The School comprises in addition to the department of Construction Economics, also the Departments of Architecture and Town and Regional Planning. He stepped down from the latter position after completion of a successful term when he was appointed as member of the Executive Management and Vice President of the ASAQS. Notwithstanding the pressures of the academic environment, he still keeps an interest in the profession where he practices as a director of the Davis Langdon Group of companies. It is the largest international quantity surveying practice with more than 200 branches worldwide

On 30 March 2006 he was inaugurated as National President of the ASAQS. Prof Brümmer will be representing the ASAQS in April 2006 at the ‘ICEC & IPMA Global Congress on Project Management and the World Congress on Cost Engineering, Project Mangement and Quantity Surveying’, to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Gerhard is married to Elmarie Basson. She is an artist and art teacher at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria. They have two children: Mieke and Wichard, both postgraduate students at Tukkies.
