Reflecting on a Year of Resilience and Growth

As we approach the conclusion of 2023, I find myself compelled to share a message that encapsulates the essence of the year for the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS). The challenges we've faced, the hurdles we've overcome – the weight of it all is palpable as I put pen to paper. Yet, in this reflection, there's a deep sense of gratitude for the victories that have shaped our profession.

In the dynamic world we navigate, where over 60% of global wealth is tied to property and urban populations continually strain the demand for diverse structures, quantity surveyors remain steadfast contributors to the built environment and society at large. What stands out is our refusal to give in; we persist, resolute and ready for whatever comes our way.

Behind the scenes, the ASAQS has diligently worked on laying the groundwork for future growth. Our focus on fostering a culture of capacity building and succession planning is steering us toward a promising future. It's about mutual respect, trust, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service and value to our members.

In less than a year, the return of presidential tours to our chapter regions has reignited local engagements, while international events have yielded signed agreements that pave the way for collaboration, professional recognition, and participation in our CPD programmes. This period has also seen deserving members recognised for their outstanding service, and students supported with bursaries, scholarships, and academic awards – all while staying true to our strategic objectives.

Amidst this, the question that echoes in my mind is, what has kept the ASAQS on a stable trajectory for over 115 years? What makes the quantity surveying profession so enduringly relevant? The answer lies in our motto, "Pretium Ponderamus" – to weigh up the cost. It's a principle rooted in biblical wisdom, urging careful consideration before embarking on any venture, aligning with our constitutional objective of upholding high standards, ethical conduct, and the integrity of quantity surveying.

Our unique skills as quantity surveyors go beyond mere number-crunching. We estimate costs, assess financial feasibility, manage procurement processes, control construction costs, and settle final accounts upon completion. We are a rare breed, seeing a project through from initiation to completion while upholding the highest standards and ethical conduct.

In conclusion, our cause is worthy, our culture noble, and our career indispensable. As we approach a well-deserved break at the close of this year, I extend warm wishes to all our members, the board, and our dedicated staff for a restful festive season and a prosperous new year.

Please note that the ASAQS offices will be temporarily closed from 14th December 2023, reopening on 9th January 2024.

On a final note, keep an eye out for exciting developments coming your way shortly: a revamped Firm Search function on our website and a 24/7 on-demand CPD platform named "Catch-Up" to enrich your professional development journey.
