Ian CochranIt is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our senior members, Mr Ian Murray Cochran, tragically died in his home last week.

Chloe Cochran, his daughter-in-law and a fellow QS, has notified us that a memorial service will be held for Ian at 11:30am on Friday 22 January at Old Parktonian Sports Club, 1 Garden Road, Bordeaux, Johannesburg.

In remembering Ian, Gerron Elferink writes: "Ian began his Quantity Surveying career, at the University of the Witwatersrand, in 1955 and graduated in 1959. [In those days we were part-time students who worked, part-time, in professional firms: the Degree course had first-year as full-time study and then four years part-time whereas the Diploma course was five years part-time employment and study; bottom line...both were hands-on, income-earning, opportunities]."

Ian spent a number of years as a professional assistant QS in some local professional firms before going into Private Practice on his own behalf during which time he lectured, for many years, in the Department of Quantity Surveying, University of the Witwatersrand. He was regarded as an esteemed colleague, both in the QS profession and by, at least, the Architectural and Quantity Surveying Faculty/Department of academia and has, in my experience, been lauded, frequently,  by many under-and post-graduates who had been under his tutelage."
