Beware of this tender scam

One of our members, Pieter Erasmus, received an official-looking e-mail on Tuesday inviting his firm to submit an expression of interest to pre-qualification for competitive tendering for projects in the Southern African Development Community. The e-mail purports to come from the Regional Development Support Office (RDSO).

The e-mail urged that: "Interested service providers and/or institutional investors who meet the prequalification criteria MUST submit expression of interest application by close of business on or before Friday 18th March 2016 at 12:00PM."

The e-mail contained links to an official invitation and an expression of interest application form... and here lies the sting, details of where and how a R25,000.00 tender deposit should be paid!

Mr. Erasmus then phoned the person mentioned in the e-mail who spoke with a foreign accent but was very knowledgeable about projects in the SADC. Pieter still felt uneasy and contacted SADC's Department of International Relations and Cooperation who confirmed to him that this invitation is indeed a scam.

The person at SADC mentioned to Pieter that a someone from a different profession had phoned earlier to enquire about the invitation so it seems that the scam has been sent to numerous firms.

Please inform your colleagues in the built-environment about this scam by sending them a link to our website.

Those of you who may have received the e-mail are advised to bring it to the attention of the SAPS and Interpol.
