Reflecting on a Year of Resilience and Growth

As we approach the conclusion of 2023, I find myself compelled to share a message that encapsulates the essence of the year for the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS). The challenges we've faced, the hurdles we've overcome – the weight of it all is palpable as I put pen to paper. Yet, in this reflection, there's a deep sense of gratitude for the victories that have shaped our profession.

In the dynamic world we navigate, where over 60% of global wealth is tied to property and urban populations continually strain the demand for diverse structures, quantity surveyors remain steadfast contributors to the built environment and society at large. What stands out is our refusal to give in; we persist, resolute and ready for whatever comes our way.

Behind the scenes, the ASAQS has diligently worked on laying the groundwork for future growth. Our focus on fostering a culture of capacity building and succession planning is steering us toward a promising future. It's about mutual respect, trust, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service and value to our members.

In less than a year, the return of presidential tours to our chapter regions has reignited local engagements, while international events have yielded signed agreements that pave the way for collaboration, professional recognition, and participation in our CPD programmes. This period has also seen deserving members recognised for their outstanding service, and students supported with bursaries, scholarships, and academic awards – all while staying true to our strategic objectives.

Amidst this, the question that echoes in my mind is, what has kept the ASAQS on a stable trajectory for over 115 years? What makes the quantity surveying profession so enduringly relevant? The answer lies in our motto, "Pretium Ponderamus" – to weigh up the cost. It's a principle rooted in biblical wisdom, urging careful consideration before embarking on any venture, aligning with our constitutional objective of upholding high standards, ethical conduct, and the integrity of quantity surveying.

Our unique skills as quantity surveyors go beyond mere number-crunching. We estimate costs, assess financial feasibility, manage procurement processes, control construction costs, and settle final accounts upon completion. We are a rare breed, seeing a project through from initiation to completion while upholding the highest standards and ethical conduct.

In conclusion, our cause is worthy, our culture noble, and our career indispensable. As we approach a well-deserved break at the close of this year, I extend warm wishes to all our members, the board, and our dedicated staff for a restful festive season and a prosperous new year.

Please note that the ASAQS offices will be temporarily closed from 14th December 2023, reopening on 9th January 2024.

On a final note, keep an eye out for exciting developments coming your way shortly: a revamped Firm Search function on our website and a 24/7 on-demand CPD platform named "Catch-Up" to enrich your professional development journey.

Karl Trusler
Executive Director

When measuring tapes take the spotlight

A lively event featuring smarties, awards, and green discussions!

On the 23rd of November, the ASAQS EC Chapter organised a Lawn Bowling Tournament at the Walmer Bowling Club. Chapter members traded their boardroom disputes for friendly clashes on the Greens. Twelve teams, including members from Rosseau Probert and
Elliot, Synergy Consulting, BTKM QS, Abamiseli QS, Johnston & Rosser, WBHO, and NMU, gathered for an afternoon of enjoyment, laughter, and some interesting bowling moments.

The event commenced with a welcoming speech from the committee and a demonstration. Teams were then paired for the first round, an 8-end game. Following this, the first set of scores was analyzed, and teams were rematched (highest vs highest, lowest vs
lowest) for the second round, a 6-end game.

The initial two rounds showcased a fantastic competitive spirit among the teams. Serious bowling was observed, with measuring tapes making appearances to determine the closest bowls.

After two rounds of intense competition, Abamiseli QS and Johnston & Rosser emerged as the two highest-ranking teams. In a thrilling 4-end finale, Johnston and Rosser secured the title of Tournament Champions.

With the tournament concluded, members retreated to the club hall, enjoying (quite a few) cold refreshments after a scorching day in the sun. The light-hearted awards ceremony featured the following prizes:

"So, you think you’re a QS?" - Smartie Pants Award for the person who most accurately estimated the number of Smarties in a glass jar – awarded to Gerrit Crafford from the NMU Lecturer Team.

"Banned from the Greens for Life" Award for the team with the lowest scores – presented to the NMU Student Chapter Team.

"Team Spirit" Award for the team with the best spirit, voted by the members – awarded to the team from WBHO.

"The Chapter’s Okay-est Bowlers" for the team that neither shone nor fizzled - presented to Rosseau Probert and Elliot, who entered three teams for the tournament.

"The Champion Award" for the tournament winners – presented to the Johnston & Rosser team for their well-deserved victory.

Members enjoyed a spitbraai dinner, and DHS Groundwater Consulting sponsored the bar tab for the night - a gesture greatly appreciated by the members and the committee.

The chapter committee received positive feedback from attendees who thoroughly enjoyed the event, indicating that Lawn Bowling and Quantity Surveying are a perfect match in the construction world.

Danie Hoffman, an esteemed member of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) Board, has garnered international recognition for his groundbreaking research on the cost of green buildings. This accolade comes from the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS), a coalition of 15 member country associations, including South Africa, representing 135,000 individual Quantity Surveyors (QS) and cost engineers. PAQS annually awards individuals who make significant contributions to the global advancement of the Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering Profession.

Among the prestigious accolades, the Academic Excellence Award is designed to acknowledge individuals or institutions excelling in academic performance or research and development, with results that benefit the profession and transcend national boundaries.

Danie Hoffman's nomination for the Academic Excellence Award received support from the ASAQS, in collaboration with the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) and the University of Pretoria (UP).

Hoffman's achievements encompass groundbreaking research to determine the cost premium of green buildings. This research has led to the publication of three highly sought-after booklets in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Each edition presents the latest research results on costs and trends in green buildings, providing the built environment with thorough, data-led research that is not only relevant but also useful and insightful. This body of work serves to validate and encourage the wider adoption of green building practices.

The research explores critical aspects such as "green building penetration" within this building typology and identifies the "green building cost premium." By meticulously examining the bills of quantities for green-certified buildings, the study produces robust and practical results for the built environment. These results demonstrate a reduction in the cost premium as efficient technologies become more affordable and widely adopted.

The three booklets stand as valuable resources, effectively communicating the cost benefits to client bodies when pursuing green-certified buildings. Simultaneously, they make a significant contribution to accelerating the shift towards achieving net-zero targets in the built environment.

Guided by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the ASAQS, the GBCSA, and UP, the Cost of Green Buildings research project, spearheaded by Danie Hoffman as the lead researcher, has achieved significant milestones. Recently, Hoffman was awarded a Ph.D. in recognition of his sterling work, marking a noteworthy contribution to advancing sustainable building practices globally. His dedication and groundbreaking research have not only earned him international recognition but have also propelled the understanding and promotion of sustainable building practices to new heights.

Building the future of South Africa is through construction and inclusivity- PART 1

Building the Future: from the Construction Industry Summit

This report was published by the Inclusive Society Institute. It's introduction summarises what is to follow: " South African economic growth has languished in the aftermath of the 2008 global economic crisis, persisting in a state of fragility, owing to a combination of global and domestic factors. Globally, the past 15 years has seen long periods of low commodity prices and devastating shocks including the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Domestically, challenges such as chronic power shortages, a faltering transportation infrastructure, particularly within the freight logistics system, and alarmingly elevated crime rates, have collectively imposed substantial impediments to the investment necessary for sustainable economic growth.

The construction industry ought to be a cornerstone upon which the foundation of the economy is laid. However, the current state of the sector in South Africa falls short of the vigour and vitality it has historically possessed.

The contribution of industry – comprising mining, manufacturing and construction – to gross domestic product (GDP) has been declining steadily in the last three decades, from 31.2% in 1994 to 24.4% in 2022 (World Bank, 2023). The prolonged underperformance can be traced back to a range of factors, including subdued investment levels, diminished confidence, unsustainable undercutting on tender prices and a surge in organised crime activities (Treasury, 2023).

The report concludes with: "The decline of the South African construction sector is symptomatic of broader economic stagnation, characterised by inadequate investment levels, dwindling confidence and a surge in organised crime activities.

To move forward, a multifaceted approach is needed. Policy changes must prioritise development of State capacity, professionalisation of the public service and transformation of supply chain management and procurement practices. These changes will create an environment for efficient project design and execution.

Further, addressing the challenges posed by the construction mafia demands urgent attention. Collaborative efforts between government, industry and community stakeholders, as well as law enforcement, are necessary to combat the problem.

The report is available here....

Please read their recommendations from page 16. They include: "Elevate project leadership - Client delivery managers, possessing the requisite certifications and expertise, should spearhead infrastructure projects. This will ensure not only streamlined execution, but also establish a single point of accountability."

Next week we look at the two-year research project aimed to diagnose the causes of South Africa’s economic challenges and collaborate with government and beyond to accelerate growth and include more South Africans in the process. The research, Growth Through Inclusion in South Africa was conducted by Harvard's Growth Lab with support from teams of the National Treasury and the Presidency of South Africa.

Building the future of South Africa is through construction and inclusivity!
PART 2

"Growth Through Inclusion in South Africa"

This two-year research project by the Growth Lab at Harvard University, aims to diagnose the causes of South Africa’s economic challenges and collaborate with government and beyond to accelerate growth and include more South Africans in the process.

"South Africa had experienced more than a decade of weak and slowing economic growth at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The South African economy has consistently lost economic diversity and complexity over time and has faced a stagnation in domestic demand alongside loss in international competitiveness. This compounds longer-term problems of extremely high inequality, widespread unemployment, and high prevalence of poverty that South Africa has struggled to overcome since the end of apartheid. As growth has slowed, fiscal challenges and macroeconomic risks have grown. South Africa has faced the evolving pandemic from a vulnerable macroeconomic position and with deep structural challenges in its labor market."

This report asks the question of why.

Why is the economy growing far slower than any reasonable comparator countries? Why is exclusion so extraordinarily high, even after decades of various policies that have aimed to support socio-economic transformation? The continuous flow of these tenders suggests that many people are falling prey to these scams. However, there are a few straightforward methods to identify these fraudulent government tenders.

Tender scammers typically make money by tricking businesses into believing they have been awarded a government tender or are inviting you to tender for a government contract. Here’s how they operate:

Fake Tenders: The fraudsters email a fraudulent invitation to tender, pretending to be from a legitimate department. They use a fictitious website domain that closely resembles the official one.
Fake Products: They request bids for specific products, often with specifications unique to one or two companies.
Fake Contacts: They provide fake contact details, including a name, email address, and phone number.
Payment: Once a company believes it has won the tender, it is tricked into depositing funds for the supposed products. In some cases, companies have lost more than R160,000 to these scams.
Disappearance: After receiving the payment, the scammers disappear, leaving the company with no products and a significant financial loss.

It’s important to note that while this is a common method, scammers may use other tactics as well. They are always evolving their methods to avoid detection and continue their fraudulent activities.

Here are some tricks to spot whether you are dealing with scammers.

Firstly, pay attention to the email address. Genuine emails from government departments typically have a gov.za domain and usually begin with an initial followed by the surname, like jdoe@sars.gov.za or jdoe@dha.gov.za. I generally disregard emails claiming to be from government departments but ending in .co or .org, such as majork@dodmill-army.co or l.popeye@dcs-department.org.

It’s worth noting that some state-owned enterprises do use a .co.za domain, like Denel.co.za.

If you’re uncertain, refer to the Government Contact Directory: https://www.gov.za/about-government/contact-directory or contact the department to confirm that the tender is legitimate.

Another way to verify is by examining the items they intend to purchase. The product description usually includes a specification that is unique to one or two companies. For instance, HX900W 600W Briefcase Solar Panel.

While the websites may appear professional and provide contact numbers and a physical address, fraudsters don’t want you tracing them back. Use Google to verify the address provided; it’s often a vacant lot or a property available for rent.

Hope the above will prevent you from being scammed.

Did you know? Gladwell proposed the 10,000-hour rule to describe those who do not fit into the usual definition of success and achievement. He used the 10,000-hour rule as the key to achieve success and meant correctly practicing a skill for around 10,000 hours in order to arrive at an expertise that’s considered to be world-class.

On the website In More Than Accounts we read that: "The elite-level violinists gathered 10,000 hours of practice, 8,000 hours for the ‘good’ violinists, and 4,000 hours for the music-teacher-level violinists. The same trend was seen on pianists. Ericsson concluded that 10,000 hours is the magic number for true expertise. The Beatle’s popularity was not an overnight success. Widely known ‘Outliers’ are the Beatles and Bill Gates. Before the Beatles’ popularity in the US, they were invited to play in a strip club in Hamburg, Germany. They were forced for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. Due to this, they amassed more than 10,000 hours playing together mastering their music before they got famous in the US. Likewise, Bill Gates spent more than 10,000 hours in computer programming before he became successful with Windows.'

Can this rule also apply to newly qualified Quantity Surveyors?

However, there are those who would dispute Gladwell’s claims, and continue to wonder, “What is the significance of the 10,000-hour rule?”. Gladwell based his 10,000-hour rule on research done by a scientist named K. Anders Ericcson. Ericcson’s research sought to answer the question: “How do people improve?” He discovered that it took around 10,000 hours for people to excel in fields such as chess, golf, and competitive musical performance. However, this has no bearing on academics or when one wants to learn a new set of skills for a career or embarking on a new hobby.

In conclusion, while the 10,000-hour rule is not a hard and fast rule for achieving success in every field, it does provide a useful framework for understanding how much time and effort it takes to become an expert in a particular area.

Next week: A Harvard psychology expert shares the No. 1 thing she sees holding people back from success and Warren Buffett’s key to success? ‘Say No to Almost Everything’

The No. 1 silent saboteur of success is...

Luana Marques, PhD, is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, founder and director of Community Psychiatry Pride at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a former president of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

She says that psychological avoidance is any response to a perceived threat that brings immediate emotional relief, but comes with long-term consequences to saboteur our success.

Retreating, reacting and remaining are three common signs of psychological avoidance, and Launa explains how we should thandle them.

An article in Yahoo Finance describes Warren Buffett as one of the most successful businessmen and investors of all time, and says that one of the keys to his success is his ability to prioritize and use his time wisely. Time is limited, so if you want to make the most of it, you have to be able to say “no” to people and opportunities that don’t directly benefit your personal or professional growth.

New supermaterial is five times lighter yet four times stronger than steel.

Scientists have successfully combined the intricate structure of DNA with the purity of glass to create a material that boasts both lightness and unprecedented strength.

DIGITALISATION OF THE QUANTITY SURVEYING PROFESSION
...Towards a Sustainable Profession

Industry Keynote address delivered by Dr. Deen Letchmiah at the 2023 SACQSP Conference on the 22nd October 2023

The theme for this year’s SACQSP conference is extremely relevant to our profession and will determine our path towards a sustainable future.

The presentations at conference tomorrow will identify the various aspects of this theme and, I assume, will delve into the details of what technologies are available to our profession. Each day, we are being introduced to new software solutions and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the built environment is going to require us to carefully review how we do things in order to remain relevant.

The traditional roles of a QS are:

Number Cruncher

Brick Counter

Estimator

Technician

Boring work

The future role of a QS is the following:

Cost Manager

Cost Controller

Manage the valve/cost chain

People Person

Innovative

Facilitator

Dynamic professional

Multi-skilled

Can digitalisation and technology help us achieve these expectations???

In the time available this afternoon, I want to discuss the soft aspects of digitalisation and the related use of technology in our workplace and its impact on communication and workplace relationships.

So, what is digitalisation in the workplace?

My understanding of a digital workplace is a virtualized form of the traditional, in-person office environment, where many elements of collaboration and productivity are performed through some combination of digital applications, cloud computing, and other technology.

We all accept that technology has fundamentally changed the way we communicate. Where we once wrote letters to people who lived a time zone away from us, now we can log into Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp, etc and chat with them as though we’re in the same room. Email communication is now a cornerstone for many businesses and central to marketing campaigns. In fact, with the increase in remote work over the past few years, some team members may only know their co-workers and clients via email and video chat.

When you unravel the complexities of technology, you see its purpose is twofold: to effect change worldwide and to simplify and enhance our everyday working lives. On the surface, the capabilities that technology brings to our offices are overwhelmingly positive. It offers convenience, collaborative power, and connectivity.

We all accept the need for technical skills or what’s commonly referred to as “hard” skills.

But what about the Soft Skills. I have tried to identify some of these soft skills that are essential to successfully navigate the digital world.

Communication

It’s essential that we develop the ability to communicate well with our managers and colleagues to help harness the power of technology.

In allowing us instant communication in the digital world, is technology damaging interpersonal communication – often referred to as the dehumanizing factor.

As face-to-face interactions diminish, our in-person smiles have been replaced by emojis, mostly quite impersonal.

The same is true at the office. Most of our interactions these days happen over a computer or phone rather than in person. When we’re more familiar with our employees as usernames or email addresses and not as individuals, that’s a problem. How can we sit behind a computer screen and expect to nurture quality relationships? We can’t – communication needs to be more than just short phrases, abbreviations and emojis.

If strong communication is stripped away, we also eliminate the most valuable components of a great team: collaboration, loyalty, engagement, and camaraderie. Worse, the distance of the screen and the facelessness of an online chat may make colleagues feel less empathetic toward each other and ultimately cultivate a culture of isolation.

Organization

Being organized makes you more efficient and productive at work. The quantity surveying profession is dynamic, giving us the opportunity to hop around to several different projects and tasks. Multitasking can be an important skill – but only if you can properly organize yourself. The ability to keep track of things such as your schedule and daily tasks is essential and so, too, is being able to prioritize your daily responsibilities efficiently without being totally dependent on technology and diary Apps on our phones.

Analytical Abilities

Being analytical gives you a major edge, where you're expected to find logical solutions to problems. Analytical abilities allow you to identify problems and errors from computer generated outputs. If you have an analytical mind, you might even identify problems before they arise. This will give you the ability to test for “reasonableness” and not technology solutions at face value.

Creativity

Even if you don't aspire to develop software programmes, your job will probably require you to come up with ideas to improve processes or products or to help co-workers find innovative solutions to their project problems.

Project Management

As a Built Environment professional, chances are, you'll be juggling multiple projects and responsibilities, and being able to meet deadlines and hit benchmarks is critical. Good project management involves the ability to make professional plans, set and reach goals, and work with colleagues to resolve project issues.

Perseverance

If you don't give up easily on difficult tasks, you could go far in the new digital environment. The best professionals are willing to tinker around persistently with a particular technology to find solutions to challenges even when everyone else has given up – as practices and technology tools are always changing. You must be able to persevere as new information and new challenges are thrown your way.

Problem Solving

QS jobs are some of the best jobs for problem solving. Ever spent hours trying to figure out why your personal computer, printer or phone isn't doing what you want it to do and had fun doing it? A lot of the technical skills you need can be picked up through tinkering and trial and error, so problem-solving abilities are necessary for your entrance into the world of digitalisation.

Resourcefulness

Part of being resourceful in your job involves being able to find technology, software and products that enhance your own productivity and the productivity of your office. Quantity surveyors who know how to use available resources well tend to shine in their jobs. And those who are consistently interested in seeking out new resources often have an edge. Resourcefulness is especially handy for those with less technology experience.

You don't have to always have the answer – you just need to know how to find it.

Curiosity

Finding enjoyment in learning new things and genuinely wanting to know how things work are major advantages for a QS. In general, curiosity about the inner workings of devices will get you far in your career path. Without this sense of curiosity, you would most likely not be as creative in applying software solutions to company processes.

Interest in Helping Others

Although quantity surveying isn't traditionally thought of as a “helping” field like medicine or social work, a big part of almost every technology job involves helping clients and fellow colleagues, whether you're creating new technology that makes people's lives easier or helping them figure out ways around technology hurdles. The ability to work as a team is critical.

Another important aspect, for the younger generation, is having the patience to teach and transfer technology skills to your senior colleagues. There always something that the “old folk” and “young blood” can learn from each other to enhance their careers.

Being Humble

A humble person is not proud and does not believe that they are better that other people. It comes from understanding our place in the larger order of things. There is always some else who is likely to know more than you and each of us should not stop learning. The universe of knowledge, especially technological advancements, is just too vast. Truly humble persons are great team players and an asset to any company.

Good luck for the conference tomorrow.

It could also be used to track the four-year cycle of athletic games which was similar to an Olympiad, the cycle of the ancient Olympic Games.

The latest news on the Antikythera Mechanism is that researchers have made new discoveries about its capabilities. In 2022, a team of scientists from the University of Ioannina in Greece used 3D imaging to create a detailed model of the mechanism. This allowed them to see how the gears interacted with each other and to identify new features that had not been previously visible. One of the most significant discoveries was that the mechanism could predict eclipses. This is a very complex calculation that requires a detailed understanding of the orbits of the sun, moon, and planets. The fact that the ancient Greeks were able to make such accurate predictions is a testament to their ingenuity and mathematical skills.

Another discovery was that the mechanism could track the movements of the planets. This was also a very complex calculation, and it required the use of a special gear called a differential gear. The differential gear allowed the mechanism to track the different speeds of the planets as they orbited the sun.

These new discoveries have further confirmed the Antikythera Mechanism's status as the world's first computer.
Onkabetse Chaane-Moiloa: Passing the torch of QS excellence

Though Onkabetse Chaane-Moiloa is walking in the surveying footsteps of her father, she does it in her own shoes, leaving her own mark for future generations.

In her role as the CEO (Executive Member) and Group Quality Manager at GT Chaane Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers CC, her responsibilities span from business strategy development to reposition and rebrand a well experienced Quantity Surveying and Project Management organisation in order to pioneer growth opportunities and administer sustainable building principles. She is also involved in devising and implementing quality control processes to evaluating existing policies and proposing refinements. Throughout her career, Onkabetse has contributed to various projects ranging from R9 million to R1.1 billion, with some projects currently in the construction phase.

Quantity Surveying a family affair

She credits her father as the one who planted the seed for her career choice.

"He, a registered quantity surveyor and former president of the QS council, laid the foundation. After finishing matric, I aimed for a finance-related career but lacked clarity," she explains. “At the time, my father had already initiated his business and suggested that it might align with my interests. I thought, " Why not give it a shot?”

But despite her father's mentorship, the journey was far from smooth.

"I felt a bit like the proverbial pastor’s child,” she chuckles. "People scrutinized me due to my dad's reputation. It seemed like I couldn't make a mistake; they observed my every move and held preconceived notions about my abilities. Nonetheless, after finding my own voice and rhythm, things changed. Since then, this career has been immensely fulfilling."

She now takes challenges in her stride. "Yes, being a woman in construction is an anomaly because it's seen as a man's world," she acknowledges. However, she chooses to focus on proving herself as a capable QS, regardless of gender. “Diversity, particularly gender diversity, brings a fresh perspective and varied skill sets to the industry, " she notes, advising young women in the industry to be fearlessly unique. “Be yourself! Be your meticulous, crazy, adventurous self,” she elaborates. “We all walk different paths, but when we bring our uniqueness to the table, then it is a different ball game.”

“Always be open and willing to learn. And most often, that learning is the result of practical experience. So go out and absorb, visit construction sites, and surround yourself with people in the industry. The more you are exposed to construction, the more you learn.”

She says young women should know that being courageous and confident doesn't mean you have to be loud. “It's called quiet confidence, and it is powerful.”

Quantity surveying ‘indispensable’ for South Africa

Apart from her professional commitments, Onkabetse derives joy from her husband Thatoyaona, daughter Marang, and their two miniature schnauzers Azania and Uhuru.

“I also like going to church and I love spending time with friends. It is important to add that a delightful mimosa alongside great food is my indulgence."

Looking ahead, Onkabetse envisions a promising future for South Africa's construction industry. As a young QS, she's eager to pass the torch to the next generation, encouraging innovation and unity. She firmly believes that empowerment should transcend gender; and unity, rather than rivalry, should drive the industry forward.

"Quantity surveying is indispensable for South Africa. It entails enhancing the built environment, ensuring clients' investments yield value, and contributing to our nation's growth. Stagnation isn't an option; we must stumble forward, learning from our missteps whilst fostering collaboration. Together, we can build a brighter future."

MEDIA CONTACT: Stephné du Toit, stephne@thatpoint.co.za, 084 587 9933, www.atthatpoint.co.za
For more information on ASAQS please visit:
Website: www.asaqs.co.za
LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/asaqs
Twitter: @the_ASAQS
Facebook: facebook.com/asaqsza

ASAQS Presidential Tour Strengthens Border Chapter Collaboration

The 2023 ASAQS Presidential Tour made a significant impact when it reached the Border Chapter on September 6th and 7th in East London. Garth Flusk, the Border Chapter Treasurer, played host to ASAQS President Mr. Newton Baloyi and Executive Director Karl Trusler. Their visit aimed to foster collaboration with key organisations in the region.

Meetings were arranged with the Coega Development Corporation, the Independent Development Trust, and Transnet to explore opportunities for cooperation. These meetings exceeded expectations, with Mr. Baloyi extending a warm invitation to engage with ASAQS for mutual growth. He emphasised the association's commitment to adding value and enhancing the services of its members.

The engagements not only facilitated productive discussions but also raised concerns about compromised service quality, cost overruns, and delayed settlements on one hand and the heavy discounting of professional fees on the other hand. Such practices if left unaddressed could have long-term detrimental effects on service delivery and infrastructure. ASAQS expressed its commitment to working with implementing agents to find mutually beneficial solutions, emphasising the importance of members being in good standing to ensure credibility.

During a morning address, Mr. Baloyi stressed the need for honesty about QS services. Despite challenges, he emphasised that service quality should never be compromised. In a challenging business environment with reduced government spending, fee discounts, and regulatory complexities, proactive involvement with the government and its agencies was advocated. QS professionals should position themselves as Principal Agents on cost-driven projects and seek involvement in engineering projects.

In conclusion, ASAQS members offer a valuable professional service essential to the built environment and society at large. The tour reinforced the importance of collaboration, quality, and proactive engagement to ensure a thriving quantity surveying sector. Like a river, their influence extends far beyond their source, impacting communities and infrastructure nationwide.

About ASAQS:

The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) is a respected professional body dedicated to promoting excellence in the quantity surveying profession.
Notes from a Small Island... the disappearance of banks

(The title copied from Bill Bryson)

I was driving through the English countryside and saw a bunch of wind turbines that looked like they had given up on life. They reminded me of last week’s topic: are we heading towards a bleak future because of the pressure from politicians and economists?

This week I visited St. Ives in Cornwall, a charming little town by the sea that has one bank left. And guess what? It’s closing down at the end of September. England is the world leader in shutting down banks, and South Africa seems to be following their example.

This morning I squeezed into the bank with dozens of other people who had some banking issues to sort out. At the front of the queue, an old lady was getting ready for her shop by swapping the new English “plastic” notes for coins. The man in front of me had the same problem I had last month. He couldn’t get the bank’s AI system to understand how to add his new credit card to his account. He spent an hour trying to explain it to the machine, but all he got was: “Please try to rephrase your question.” How are you supposed to survive in a first world town where you can’t get a signal on your phone and the WiFi is slower than a snail?

After September, the bank will send someone to the post office once a week. But they won’t be able to do much more than the AI system allows them to do. What will happen until the government and banks force us to go cashless? Will we have to rely on shady money changers who give us coins and small notes? What’s going on with the banks in your town?

I used to have a business account with Standard Bank in Vanderbijlpark. They replaced a two-story bank in the centre of town with a long queue in our local shopping centre. There is no waiting area big enough for the customers who sometimes wait for hours to get in.

I went to a bank in Thailand recently. They were fast and efficient (and sometimes they even had an interpreter) and, best of all, they didn’t charge me any fees! Isn’t that what banks are supposed to do? Serve their customers and not charge them for being customers?

After all, it’s our money that they lend out at interest!”

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader: Vuyolwethu Badi's Journey in Quantity Surveying

Vuyolwethu Badi, a seasoned Professional Quantity Surveyor with over 16 years of experience in the South African Built Environment, is making a significant impact in the industry. As a Director and Shareholder at RLB, a prominent global cost consultancy
firm, her journey to success has been marked by determination, resilience, and a deep-rooted desire to uplift her community.

A Serendipitous Meeting with her Future Career

Born and raised in rural Middledrift in the Eastern Cape, Vuyolwethu's upbringing in a conservative family laid the foundation for the person she is today. Her late mother, a teacher, and her father, a former politician and businessman, instilled in her
the values of love, discipline, and nurturing. Despite her modest background, Vuyolwethu's drive and curiosity led her on an unexpected path towards quantity surveying.

"I first went to a local school, but in Grade 3, I identified Adelaide Gymnasium school as my preferred choice,” she recalls. “I saw the girls from that school in their smart blazers and ties, and I wanted to dress like them. It connected me to the ‘big
    wide world’.”

She then stumbled upon the industry by accident, she explains. “I approached a man who was measuring up the school's hostels for renovations and inquired about his work. That's when I discovered what quantity surveyors do. At that time, I was struggling
to decide on a career, and I became convinced that quantity surveying would enable me to give back to my poor community."

Vuyolwethu's journey to becoming a registered quantity surveyor involved hard work and perseverance. She completed her BTech degree in 2007 and joined RLB in 2014, where she made an immediate impression with her strong work ethic. By 2016, she had completed all the Professional Skills Modules prescribed by the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying
Profession (SACQSP) and became a registered Professional Quantity Surveyor. Remarkably, she achieved her goal of becoming a director at the age of 33, ahead of her initial target of 35.

She vividly remembers the early days when she struggled to secure an internship, but her boldness and determination prevailed. "In mid-February of the year, I should have started my internship, but I was still looking for a job. I walked into the Department
of Public Works in Pretoria and asked to speak to someone about the quantity surveyors they worked with. I had to fend for myself without the support networks available to young women today," she shares.

Giving back and moving forward

Vuyolwethu says her involvement with ASAQS has been instrumental in her career development. Since 2016, she has proudly maintained her professional membership and briefly served on the ASAQS Gauteng Chapter from October 2022 to May 2023.

"What I appreciate most about my membership with ASAQS has been the organization's steadfast commitment to providing high-quality, continued professional development training. Through various training modules and webinars, I have had the opportunity to
stay abreast of industry trends and gain a deeper understanding of the quantity surveying profession," she affirms.

As an experienced quantity surveyor, Vuyolwethu offers valuable advice to youngsters considering a career in the industry. "To truly excel and thrive in this challenging professional landscape, it is essential for youngsters to prioritize professionalism
above all else," she asserts. “They should approach every task with focus, integrity, and high standards of work ethics while continuously seeking personal growth through acquiring new skills and expanding their knowledge.”

Beyond her professional achievements, Vuyolwethu finds joy in travelling and cherishing moments with her family. “When I'm not engrossed in work, my mind is consumed by planning my next thrilling adventure. Exploring new destinations and creating unforgettable
    memories is my ultimate passion."

With her remarkable achievements and unwavering spirit, Vuyolwethu is paving the way for future generations and leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
