Women's DayThere is nothing that gives me more pride than walking into a University’s lecture hall to give a presentation on Quantity Surveying and seeing how many young women are not only pursuing qualifications within the construction industry, but who are on their way to becoming Quantity Surveyors. The number of women, particularly black females, pursuing Quantity Surveying qualifications is a welcome change in our sector. These women will be the future leaders in our industry. They will follow in the footsteps of the women who are already taking a seat at the table and leaning in to take a leadership role in construction projects.

There are many heated debates about women’s roles in the construction industry. Within the Quantity Surveying sphere, there is no debate as to whether a woman can or can’t do the work. We know women can because they’re already succeeding at it. The people who become successful Quantity Surveyors are the ones with acumen, ambition, integrity, and drive. Those who are able to compliment these foundational attributes with management skills and leadership skills will prosper, regardless of their gender or race.

At ASAQS, we fully embrace gender equality and we are vocal about our commitment to diversity and inclusion. There is still a disparity between the number of male Quantity Surveyors and female Quantity Surveyors entering the field. Not only is it a traditionally male-dominated industry, but it’s possible that women can become demotivated by the lack of female mentors available. With time and ongoing transformation efforts, this is sure to change.

Each profession has its own set of challenges and stressors, but as a woman, you will be able to carve a niche in the industry as a Quantity Surveyor whether you want to run your own professional practice or you are looking for a career that in most instances may be able to provide you the flexibility that gives more time with your family.

The young women I meet simply want to register within a profession where they can fly. To those women, I want to say that this is where you can soar. It’s a profession where you can make a difference and we look forward to supporting you on your journey.
