Thursday, 06 March 2025

The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) is pleased to announce the successful launch of its Student Chapter at Nelson Mandela University. Held on 28 February 2025, this event marks an important step in bridging the gap between academia and the professional world by equipping students with valuable resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

The event brought together students, industry professionals, and ASAQS leadership to celebrate the formation of the first ASAQS NMU Student Chapter Committee:

  • Chairperson: Yiva Qwesha
  • Vice-Chairperson: Sona Sidlova
  • Secretary: Natasha Sihlobo
  • Marketing and Events: Luyolo Dambuza
  • Marketing and Events Sub-Committee: Zane Newton and Amahle Kupiso

This committee will play a key role in driving professional development, organising events, and ensuring that students benefit from ASAQS’s expertise and resources. Their leadership is expected to enhance engagement and strengthen connections between students and industry professionals.

The Purpose of the ASAQS Student Chapter
The ASAQS Student Chapter at NMU is designed to introduce students early to the Quantity Surveying profession, keeping them informed about industry trends and career opportunities. Students will have access to mentorship programs, CPD-accredited webinars, and networking sessions aimed at preparing them for successful careers.

The main objectives of the student chapter are to:

  • Strengthen relationships between ASAQS, faculty, and students.
  • Advocate for the advancement and integrity of the Quantity Surveying profession.
  • Provide networking opportunities with industry professionals.
  • Promote leadership, collaboration, and innovation among students.
  • Address student concerns and ideas at an industry level.

Collaboration with ASAQS Eastern Cape
ASAQS Eastern Cape is excited about partnering with the NMU Student Chapter on upcoming projects and events. This collaboration aims to offer practical exposure and industry insights to students. Special thanks to Ms. Christine Mutanda, ASAQS Stakeholder Relations Manager, for her support in establishing this initiative.

Opportunities in the Profession
ASAQS has noted a growing demand for South African Quantity Surveyors in countries like Ireland, the UAE, Australia, and New Zealand. This highlights the global competitiveness of South African talent and the promising prospects for ASAQS student members.

Join the Movement
ASAQS encourages all NMU students to join the Student Chapter, attend events, and take advantage of mentorship and networking opportunities. Engaging early in the profession will provide a strong foundation for their future careers.

Congratulations to the NMU ASAQS Student Chapter and its inaugural committee!
