On the 13th of April The ASAQS Wits Student Chapter held a seminar uncovering the Opportunities of a Quantity Surveyor in various sectors at the University of the Witwatersrand, WSS3; with highly respected key note speakers from numerous sectors, namely:

  • Stephen Carr – Quantity Surveying in Mining (Cubit Quantity Surveyors)
  • Nonku Ntshona – Quantity Surveying in Property Development (Nonku Ntshona and Associates)
  • Makhotso Lengane – Quantity Surveying in Law (Webber Wentzel), and
  • Patience More – SACQSP

As at 31 March 2015, The South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP) had registered 1807 Candidate Quantity Surveyors and 1936 Professional Quantity Surveyors (PrQS’s). The Council Representative highlighted that these results are attributed to the lengthy processes associated with registering as a Professional Quantity Surveyor and a lack of knowledge about the profession.

Nonku Ntshona - an African female entrepreneur- founded a QS consultancy in her backyard with no employees. She highlighted the importance of networking from an early stage as well as taking the initiative to approach your superiors for more work and experience.

Makhotso Lengane stated that the technical knowledge/perspective of a Quantity Surveyor is of much importance during the process of drafting contractual agreements. As such, Quantity Surveyors help the lawyers interpret the “technical information” and translate it into simpler language.
