- The purpose of this research is to identify the perception of quantity surveyors advising on building specifications to support sustainable building developments.
- Our thesis focuses on the factors affecting the wage gap between genders within the South African quantity surveying profession.
- The quantity surveying profession was introduced to assist in solving problems arising from construction costs, construction management and construction communications within a construction project (Seeley, 1984). However, in the past decade, there has been reason to believe that the quantity surveying profession will no longer be relevant to the construction industry. The ideology circulating the industry is that for the profession to survive, quantity surveyors must adopt new additional skills which will enable them to be innovative in the profession. The purpose of this questionnaire is to draw on the experiences quantity surveyors have had in the industry, any challenges they might have faced and the way in which said challenges were tackled. This will help us gain insight into the extent of innovative services that the professionals may have embarked on.
- Our thesis focuses on Information Construction Industry professionals generate which could benefit the development agenda of developers and local authorities within the South African quantity surveying profession. We have a survey that we would like
to administer to quantity surveyors in the Western Cape through the ASAQS website and we would like your assistance in doing so.

- The Link Between Professional Ethics and Quality in Construction
The aim of my research is to investigate the link between professional ethics and quality in construction in order to identify whether such link exists. Few studies have been conducted in the South African context that indicates the link between professional ethics and quality in construction. Professional ethics and quality in construction go hand-in-hand and in reality very rarely can one aspect be present without the other. I have compiled a questionnaire that will allow us to investigate the link between professional ethics and quality in construction.
http://forms.nmmu.ac.za/websurvey/q.asp?sid=1490&k=phlsdorsrc
- Quantity Surveyors’ ethical behaviour (Population: Registered Quantity Surveyors)
Professional ethical misconduct largely contributes to the negative impact on the reputation of the industries and their respective professionals. In the Quantity Surveying profession, ethical perceptions have remained unclear as well as the extent to which the role of professional ethics amongst quantity surveyors influences the quality of services rendered. It is therefore imperative to promote and elevate ethical expertise amongst quantity surveyors in order to attain sustained and acceptable quality of services in construction to enhance professionalism
.
- Broad based black economic empowerment in Quantity Surveying businesses (Population: Quantity Surveying firm directors)
Although a vivacious media debate has emerged on the BEE process in quantity surveying business, little academic analysis has been conducted to date. The aim of this study is therefore to identify to what extent Quantity Surveying firms implement BBBEEE and the impact that BBBEE compliance have on ten important dimensions of business performance
- Effective leadership communication of Quantity Surveyors in South Africa (Population: Registered Quantity Surveyors)
Effective communication by a team leader ensures that everyone in the team shares the same information and understands the goals set for the project team. This research will provide insight into the possible formation of in-groups and the potential (or lack of potential) for effective response by team colleagues to the team leader’s communication, leading to optimal performance of project-related tasks.
- If your firm has been involved in a Quantity Surveyor consortium or is currently involved in a Quantity Surveyor consortium, I would be grateful if you could take 10-15 minutes of your busy schedule to complete the questionnaire by clicking on the link below:
- The Competence Level of Quantity Surveying Graduates : Employers’ Perceptions (Population: Quantity Surveying firm directors or office managers)
The aim of this study is to determine whether or not the QS graduate entering the workplace is competent to do his or her job in meeting the expectations of the employer and how Tertiary Institutions can assist the graduates, enabling them to meet the expectations of the employer.
- Title : "The Role of the Quantity Surveyor in the Green Building Process" (Being part of a green building project in the past is not a prerequisite)
Green Building progress in South Africa has been on a steady increase since the establishment of the Green Building Council of South Africa in 2007, however its progress has been stunted by cost concerns. As the 'cost specialist' of the construction industry, the responsibility falls on the Quantity Surveyor in reduce these concerns. It is well documented that various technologies are steadily shifting the focus of the Quantity Surveyor away from their traditional roles. This has forced the modern-day quantity surveyor to adapt, assuming different roles within the industry. In the future, it could be essential for the profession that the modern-day Quantity Surveyor is able to provide valuable input when involved in the Green Building process.
